What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of thin, metal needles to stimulate specific points of the body that reach meridians. These stimulation points are called acupuncture points or acupoints. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that there are 365 commonly used acupuncture points on 20 meridians on the human body. Typically, it takes 15 to 30 minutes of manipulating the needles in these acupuncture points and 30 to 60 minutes of retaining the needles. By doing so, it regulates the flow of qi throughout the body and restore health to the mind and body, thus balancing the yin and yang. The insertions of needles are manipulated either by the hand or by electrical stimulation, called electroacupuncture.

Internal medicine disorders is a big part of the acupuncture practice. The Meridian system and the pulse diagnosis allow us to identify and treat the causes of illness and the symptoms. In this respect, acupuncture serves as a preventative as well as a restorative measure.
A unique feature of a meridian diagnosis involves its ability to determine the pathogenic factor’s location and nature in the meridian system and determining the pathogen’s relative strength and the individual.

Treatment of the acupuncture meridian system enables us to access the parasympathetic, endocrine, and circulatory systems, thereby addressing various complaints.

Internal Medicine

Integrative acupuncture draws upon influences from classical acupuncture, as well the contemporary fields of manual therapy which focus on the fascial system. There is an integration of western science with eastern healing arts. The cornerstone of Integrative Acupuncture is to foster practices that nourish and improve life.

At our practice, we specifically integrate the Traditional Chinese Medicine’s Meridian System and the Neurological system on Western Medicine to enhance positive results on the treatment of pain.

Is acupuncture for me?

Yes, Acupuncture is an effective way to restore balance to your body and all the systems within it. Another major factor in chronic illness is hormonal imbalance. Acupuncture can help restore hormonal balance by increasing the flow of Qi (the body’s energy) and removing congestion or blockages along the meridians, or pathways, where the Qi travels throughout the body.

Another great benefit is the improvement of blood circulation. Circulatory issues are a common concern for a lot of people nowadays. A sedentary lifestyle, paired with a poor diet, can result in reduced blood flow. Acupuncture stimulates blood flow and improves circulation to make sure oxygen and nutrients are being distributed to all the body’s cells.

With all these systemic and non-chronic illnesses benefits to your body, it is safe to say that acupuncture has many health benefits for everyone!

What acupuncture does to the body?

Acupuncture points (in western medicine) are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.

What kind of conditions can be treated with acupuncture?

Acupuncture stimulates Qi energy and activates the body's ability to heal itself. Some symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture has been proved, through controlled trials, to be an effective treatment are such as: Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy, allergic rhinitis, arthritis, asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, constipation and diarrhea, depression and anxiety, dysmenorrhoea, epigastralgia, facial paralysis, frozen shoulder, headache and migraine, induction of labour, IBS, insomnia, knee pain, shoulder pain and other joint pain, low back pain, low libido, neck pain, rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica pain, shingles, sprain, stroke recovery, tennis elbow and many more!

Is acupuncture painful?

Some people may be afraid of needles and assume that acupuncture is painful. Actually there is no pain at all. The needles used for acupuncture are solid and extremely thin, much thinner than those used for injections or blood drawing.

When the needles reach the acupuncture points, there is a sensation that could be described as tingling or numbing, rather than as ‘painful’. Sometimes you may feel the sensation of soreness, heaviness, distension, or pressure during the course of needle insertion. These sensations may also be transferred along the acupuncture channels to another part of the body. None of those typical feelings could be described as painful.
